My Follow Fest Post

The purpose of this blogfest is to meet other writers and build our platforms.

Follow Fest '14 runs thru Friday.
There's still time to sign up! :)

Fiction or nonfiction?
99.9% Fiction

What genres do you write?

Romance. I've written paranormal and historical romance (America, 1850's). A second historical and a dystopian are in the works.

Are you published?
Yes. I wrote a nonfiction piece that was published in a benefit anthology, Overcoming Adversity, in February of 2013. I also contributed to a free writer's resource titled How I Found The Write Path. My debut novel, Come Back, was released this past May.

To learn more about my debut and see the trailer, go here
The Kindle version is currently on sale for 99c.

Do you do anything in addition to writing?
I do some freelance editing.

Tell us about yourself?
I'll try not to make this sound like my bio. LOL

I'm a neonatal nurse and a science buff.
I'm married and have three teenage kids (four, if you count my husband).
I used to garden and sew, but now I just write. :)

I read romance (mostly western historical), but I also like regency and paranormal. I sometimes read contemporary and romantic suspense. Occasionally I venture outside the genre, into things like crime thrillers.

One of these days, I'd like to retire (from nursing), move to the country, and travel the US.

What are you reading right now?
I just finished The Captive by Grace Burrowes. Excellent!

Which authors influenced you the most?
I always hate this question. So many writers list classics, and I'm ashamed to admit I haven't read nearly as many of those as a writer should.

I'll steal another blogger's answer and say any well-written fiction inspires me. I like brisk pacing, but not so fast the story lacks good character development. I like fresh plots, but I also like the predictability of the HEA in romance.

I participate in Alex J. Cavanaugh's Insecure Writers Support Group the first Wednesday of every month.

  2. Being a science buff, what topics interest you the most? Biology? Chemistry? Physics? Does that play a large role in your writing?

    1. Oo. Good question.

I'd have to say biology and genetics. And yes, it does, especially when I write something with sci-fi or paranormal elements.

  5. Hi Melissa,

You seem like you have a busy schedule too. What places do you hope to travel too? That is one of my goals in life to travel all over the world...but I would say on the top of my list is to go to Hawaii so I can see the volcanoes. :)
Thank you for putting together this event.

I just want to travel around and see the major sights, visit historical towns, etc. Not sure if I'll ever make it to Hawaii.

  6. Hi Melissa, nice to meet you. I've commented on other blogs that you've commented on...and maybe I've commented on your blog before also...but nice to officially say Hello. You sound busy and I understand busy - I have three/four teenagers, too. So, I'm off to get some writing done.

  10. Hey, thanks for organizing this!

I don't think you should feel bad about not having read 'the classics.' I haven't, but it's not hard for me to name books that stay with me long after I first read them. (The tough part is figuring out when to stop naming them!)

  18. Melissa, as you know, I was intimidated by this blog hop. Today something told me to go ahead and do it. Since I woke up at 5 a.m. because of my dog, I figured I had the time to create a good post for it--and it was fun! I see I've followed and linked to you in many ways, except for Goodreads, so I sent you a friend request for to make that connection. Thanks so much for creating and hosting this blog hop. It's a wonderful way to build community through blogging. I'm glad to be involved and have already visited and joined many of the fascinating authors participating in this year's Follow Fest.
